Fun Family Dinner Ideas for Halloween

Candy Corn Cookies

Halloween is a holiday that is as spooky as it is fun for the whole family. Before you hit the streets, avoiding tricks in search of treats, you’ll need the right fuel for the journey. We have some awesome recipes you can share with your family or bring to the next big Halloween block party.

Hors d’Oeuvres

  • Cocktail Weenie Thumbs
You can’t go wrong with the classic cocktail wiener appetizer, no matter the season. With only three ingredients, they are inexpensive and simple to prepare in a slow cooker. All you’ll need is a pack of cocktail sausages, barbecue sauce, and grape jelly. Mix your sauce and jelly in a slow cooker, add your sausages, and cook on low heat for 2 to 3 hours. When they’re ready, you can cut little indents to have them resemble a finger and a bit of minced onion on the tip to resemble a nail. Scary but delicious!

  • Spooky Charcuterie Board
Start a dinner out right with a fancy and frightening charcuterie spread. Start by adding sliced double cream brie and blueberry vanilla goat cheese. These are uniquely colored cheeses that are quite delectable. When folded and pinched together with toothpicks, prosciutto and salami slices look like appetizing intestines. Blackberries, strawberries, and pistachios add an extra pop of color and flavor to the board.

Round it out with a honey spread and a small dish of green olives, which you can pass as a bowl of eyeballs.

  • Spider Mini-Pizzas
These will be a hit for kids! They’re simple to assemble and serve. All you’ll need is a pack of pre-made pizza dough, tomato sauce, cheese, Italian herbs, and black olives. Put these small pizzas together as normal, but when it comes time to add your olive topping, cut them so they resemble a spider when sitting atop the pizza. One-half olive for the body, another half for the head, and an olive diced into eighths for the legs.

Entrées

  • Mummy Meatloaf
This is an amazing dish that any guest or ghost will love. Create a piece of meatloaf from ground beef, onion, bread crumbs, ketchup, eggs, string cheese, and salt and pepper. Shape your loaf, with a stick of string cheese in the middle, to look like mummies, and then bake in the oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for about 25 minutes. When it’s done, wrap your meatloaf with crescent roll dough in a way that resembles the bandage wraps of a mummy. Bake until the crescent dough is golden brown and the meat is measured at 160 degrees Fahrenheit. This stylized dish tastes great!

  • Bat (Chicken) Wings
For the perfect, creepy Halloween supper, try baking these sweet-and-sour chicken wings in the oven. They’re great for parties, as entertaining as they are scrumptious. Also, they’re very easy to make! Whisk together some brown sugar, barbecue sauce, soy sauce, and teriyaki sauce. You can add a bit of food coloring for added effect. Add your chicken wings to the sauce and ensure that every piece is covered and marinates overnight. Put them in the oven for an hour at 350 degrees Fahrenheit, then dinner is served!

  • Eyeball Pasta
If you remember the old spaghetti-and-peeled-grapes trick from Halloween parties past, then you’ll love this dish that shares an ingredient. This is a simple spaghetti and meatball dinner that includes a few more ingredients as frightening flourishes. Put together your favorite spaghetti and sauce, then when creating the meatballs, include small slices of cheese cut into rounds and halved olives on each meatball in the shape of an eye. When served, it’ll look like you’re eating spaghetti and eyeballs!

Sides

  • Shrunken Head Potatoes
This Halloween-themed food is saltier than it is sweet. Like many of the other dishes on our list, they’re also fairly simple to make. All you’ll need is a bag of russet potatoes, some oil, herbs, and vegetable seasoning. With a paring knife, cut small, skull-like faces into the potatoes. Cover them in oil and your selected herbs and seasonings. They go in the oven at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for about 40 to 45 minutes. They’re fun to dip in cheese, ketchup, or mayonnaise.

  • Spine-chilling Roasted Vegetables
If you’ve got a picky eater in the family, this side dish will help the food go down easier. Begin by collecting an assortment of sweet potatoes, carrots, and red beets. Boil these ingredients until they are easy to cut, then form them into fun shapes, like pumpkins or ghosts, with a paring knife or a cookie cutter. Bake them for an hour at 400 degrees Fahrenheit, and complete with a honey and balsamic drizzle.

Dessert

  • Spider Cookies
If you want to match your mini-pizzas from earlier, you can do that with spider cookies. These are sugar cookies topped with your favorite flavor and color of frosting and a spider made from an Oreo cookie. With the Oreo as the body and black icing as the legs, it’s an aesthetically pleasing cookie. You can add some silly eyes to the spider with leftover frosting and icing.

  • Candy Corn Chocolate Chip Cookies
Candy corn is a staple Halloween candy and a great cookie ingredient. If you’ve got excess bags of sweets, it’s an effective way to use the sweet without wasting them. Pick your favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe and add a batch of candy corn in addition to the chocolate. These colorful cookies are beautiful and yummy, a great treat for any kid or kid-at-heart.

  • Dirt and Worms
This delicacy may look creepy and crawly, but it’s sweet and enjoyable! They’re easy for kids to make and they’ll love the combination of chocolate and gummy worms. By layering chocolate pudding and crushed Oreo cookies in a cup, you can make a dessert that looks just like the ground from a graveyard. Add a few colorful gummy worms, and you’ve got a treat that can’t be beaten!
